PLEASE do me one more favor, and request that any of your friends who would appreciate this, take the time to listen, this show needs some support because 1. What kind of show it is and 2. Breaking a lot of podcast rules to be that kind of show.

I want it to remain what it is, and i want to be able to put the time into it and make it enjoyable for myself and others. I think the first 5 episodes are something special and i want to keep up this momentum, but there is no way i am going to be able to if there is nobody listening. The numbers are really low, and i don't think it is because of what the show is, although i am sure that plays a part to a usual podcast goer, but there are people out there like you and I who want to be entertained by this sort of genre and without the support, without the feedback and the encouragement of "hey i enjoy this, please keep going" i am just wasting my time. I can listen to my hd worth of music to myself and accept that i am the only person who likes this sort of thing, if that truly is the case. But i don't believe i found my audience yet, its only 5 episodes in, and there is more to do, so... please...keep coming back, and tell everyone who you know would dig on this, or is a fan of TOTM or my solo stuff, because that makes its way into every show in some small way or another.

THANK YOU 100x in advance!!!!

-Stephen

Re: Episode 5: Salt Water Blues

I'm loving this so far. Dont disappoint me.

Re: Episode 4: I’m Not Shy Anymore

btw... i posted the playlist over at www.facebook.com/thetourist...

Re: Episode 4: I’m Not Shy Anymore

I'll get to it as soon as i get through this week :)))

Re: Episode 4: I’m Not Shy Anymore

OK, so where are the notes?

Re: Episode 1: You Can’t Fart Around With Love

David, most if not all of this is completely out of print, rare, unknown, and public domain. Most of it. a few tracks are from bands that are just real underground. Im not really doing anything different than we have always done in the past. There isn't a dime coming in either for show support. Have you been checking out the new podcast? The Great Exchange? that one is a podcast i care about being shut down or not. Then I forget it all again. Seems like a fun sport. I've known a few people who are roller derbiers. Interesting to hear that Whip It wasn't really accurate, because otherwise, how would anyone know that unless they were already informed. So Stephen, do you skate at all? Just wondering, since you bring up weight, exercise, etc. from time to time. Seems like skating would get you in shape. I mean serious skating. I only went roller skating once in my life, that was about 7-8 years ago with a church thing. I went around the rink one time and my shins were on fire so bad I just quit right there. And I wasn't in bad shape overall, just that I wasn't used to those particular muscles being strained. I grew up ice skating pretty regularly, but it's been over 30 years.

I never watched much of Charlie Sheen. It is kind of a car wreck thing, you gotta stop and watch a bit. I saw about 10 minutes of the first season of 2 1/2 Men and realized I wasn't interested. I just feel bad for his kids and his dad, Martin. I like him, he seems like a decent guy. I always liked Emilio better than Charlie, Emilio was great in Repo Man. Back then in the early '80s before he was well known, I was like, "whoa, check out that kid, he looks just like Martin Sheen!"

Didn't watch the Oscars, but saw a few of the movies this year. Still haven't seen The Fighter, but I like Christian Bale a lot as well as Mark Wahlberg. I watched a doc from the '90s that had the real crackhead Dicky Eklund who Christian Bale portrayed. As good as Christian Bale is, he still appeared to have his teeth, and none of those crackheads in the doc did. Very depressing. But the real story is good and was already the story behind the Dropkick Murphys' "Warrior's Code".

I liked "Inception", but I'm kind of slow and got mixed up in the middle of it when they got a couple layers into the dreams. My wife and my son seemed to get it right away, but I had a little trouble even when I watched it again the other day...

The Social Network was good, but the soundtrack didn't make a huge impression on me. Not saying it wasn't Oscar-worthy, just didn't stand out either way. I never was a big Trent Reznor fan either, so going into it I didn't anticipate anything.

I just watched "Fathead" and I did like that. I'm not totally convinced about everything in it straight up, but it made some good points. Truth is, I didn't give a huge amount of thought to "Super-Size Me". I liked it OK, but yeah you gotta wonder why just eating at McDonald's would make a lean, healthy guy pack on 25 lbs and almost shut down his liver. A good question is--why did he have to eat so much? Naughton showed you could eat fast food and still keep the calories at a reasonable level. Why eat 4000-5000 calories? And I agree that the whole "fat=bad" mentality is not accurate. But I think that neither is the "fat=good, carbs=bad" thing. I think anytime a movie shows a simplistic argument with a cartoon graphic and pushes an extreme perspective, combined with somewhat of a conspiracy theory about the government, you gotta look at it a little closer. So this is a good starting place. His points about personal responsibility and choice were very good.
There's not one culprit behind modern obesity. Eating tons of fat isn't good, but definitely I think mass consumption of sugary drinks is a big cause of weight gain. And soda is soooo cheap to make and pushed so hard. Even diet drinks aren't too good for you, I don't trust those artificial sweeteners. I know people who have lost a lot of weight just by cutting out sodas. I think his point vegetable oil wasn't totally right. He made it sound like all vegetable oil was both terrible and a modern invention. Olive oil has been around for thousands of years, and is good for you. Corn oil isn't really good for you and is more recent. Canola oil is better than corn oil and while a recent development, was used in an older form 100s of years ago. So he makes it sound like it never would have occurred to ancient peoples to use vegetable based oils, but that's just not true.
I don't remember if he got into Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, but that's in about everything, and it is bad for you. Yeah I guess he did touch on that, because that's what trans-fats are. Margarine is hydrogenated. I avoid that as much as possible.
I think he also gave the impression that all breads, starches, grains etc. are bad for you and only modern cultures have eaten them, which also isn't quite right. People have eaten these things for 1000's of years too. The plain white versions don't have much nutritional value though and could be substituted with healthier alternatives.
His points about activity and exercise were good. You need to be active and get some kind of regular exercise, especially is you have a job where you sit on your butt all day. When I was a kid I was always running around and riding a bike everywhere. Even into adulthood I walked most places. I notice that when I'm out of work I put on weight. Then when I go back to work, activity increases, and the weight mostly drops off.

Re: Episode 37: If You Ain’t Dutch, You Ain’t Much!

That would be rad. Let me see if I can make it.

About the Randy Newman thing, I feel you. I guess it's some kind of generational thing. I know it's against the law to make fun of him for some reason. I don't get it either.

M. So freaking frustrating. Scott and I have been through so much this past year. Thanks for checking this episode out. This was our first episode with Scott as co-host. Before this, the show was quite different. Some not so good, some really awesome. Justin (who was in Narcissus, now my brother n law) was my co-host before.

we are starting to get on our feet again. Both in terms of podcasting, and work. Scott got a job this past week, and i am in the middle of interviews for a promising paint job. We shall see......

anyway, prayers to you for stability. It is always grating as you say, when we as Christian men are struggling to do our call.

here's to strong health and job security!

Re: Episode 35: Lost & Found

I totally feel you in the area of being unemployed.
